NECRONOMICON NOTES   Yeah, another convention has come and gone and it's time to bask in the lasting glow of a job well done. Oh, I know there were a few complaints here and there, but the praise we have been getting has far outweighed andy negative words we've heard. I'm already getting email asking about getting memeberships for NECRONOMICON '97 from some of those who came this year and had such a good time they want to go ahead and join for next year. Since we put NECRONOMICON on for the fans pay to attned it, this makes us feel that we are doing what we should be.
NECRONOMICON is a non profit organization. All money made by the sale of memberships, dealers tables, art show fees, "yard sale" items, T-shirts, and charity auction donations goes into paying convention bills, a donation to Wildlife Rescue, Inc., and to our treasury to be seed money for the next year's convention. The only reward we give ourselves from the proceeds is a free meal at the Stone Hill meeting that comes the month after the convention. What could be better for a bunch of science fiction fans? Our convention has been and always will be run by fans, for fans and fans are always in favor of free food.
We can proudly say that all the bills are paid, we have money to start off NECRONOMICON '97 with and we were able to give Wildlife Rescue, Inc., $7,500, which is actually $4,000 over the money taken in at the auction. One item at the auction went for the highest sum ever bid in NECRONOMICON auction history. Karen River's panther carved in stone went for $650. We thank Karen for so kindly donating her one of a kind masterpiece to help Wildlife Rescue, Inc.
We had approximately 1,300 people in attendance this year. The figure is indefinite because we are counting staff, guests, guests' compainions, and dealers in the total. Without those people counted, the figure would be closer to 1,100 just folks.
This is exactly what we had hoped for. With a hotel that has more meeting space than our last hotel did, we could accomodate more people than we've had in years past, but we did not want too many more. None of us likes a convention where you are so crowded you can't move or one where you have to stand in line for hours to get registered. We knew what we wanted to grow up to be and we did it and it was good.
I hope all of you who attended had a great time and that you'll be back with us next year when our guests of honor will be long time NECRONOMICON friend, SF author and NASA employee Joseph Green, and SF authors (new to us but anticipated to become good NECRONOMICON friends) Kevin J. and Rebecca Anderson.
If you didn't make it this time, you'll just have to have twice the fun next year.

A STONE"S THROW AWAY   The December Stone Hill meeting will be on the 8th(my birthday, so I get a ready made party--cool, huh?) at Chez Bennett', the home of Linda and David Bennett. The address is 12215 Spottswood Dr., Riverview. If you need directions, you can call the Bennetts at 671-2859 or my house at 677-6347.
This will be a blood drive meeting and it's a very important one. Blood donation is typically down during the winter months and the need for blood is typically higher then as well. You can see that there is a problem there. So, take your vitamins, eat good food with lots of iron, and give someone the best Hanukkah or Christmas gift you can -- the gift of life.

COOK'S CORNER   The following recipe may have appeared in S.H.L.T. once before, but I'm not going to the trouble of looking through all the back issues to find out for certain. It's worth repeating if it has. I've never had a good name for these cookies, but my fencing coach referred to them as "power bars" after their recent appearance at his salle. That sounds good to me, so they shall henceforth, in my records, be known as:

Sally Duran Power Bars

2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 can sweetened condensed milk
12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup flaked coconut
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 325 degrees and generously grease a 13" X 9" pan.
In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. Use a heavy duty wooden spoon because this stuff fights back. When the mixture is moist all through, put in in th pan and bake it for 25 minutes. Let it cool completely before cutting it into bars.
These cookies do not have to be refrigerated, but those who know the joy of cold chocolate will enjoy them well if they are.
This recipe doubles very well, so you can make large batches for parties or gifts. I don't recommend more than doubling it just because you'll strain your arm mixing the dough. (It's hard to fence if you've strained your sword arm, you know.)

MORRIS' MINI MOVIE REVIEWS   The only theatrical release movie I have seen recently is "Thinner," which is based on the novel by Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman. I have not read the novel but the movie held up pretty well on its own. It's not a cheery picture show however. It's kind of hard to like any of the characters and nobody lives happily ever after. To be honest, I am not sure if I liked it or not. I think it just isn't quite up my alley. Richard Lee Byers saw it too and he liked it pretty well. He's more of a horror fan than I am, so he's more used to such dark fare.
More fun to watch were a couple of old movies I checked out on video. The first was "The Adventures of Don Juan" with Erroll Flynn and the second was "Scaramouche" with Stuart Granger. (Maybe that should be "Stewart.") These are both full of daring deeds and fancy swordplay. "The Adventures of Don Juan" is a bit silly, but when you are in the mood for something really light, it's just right. To my taste, "Scaramouche" was a better movie. ON a strictly superficial female level, Granger's darker good looks appealed to me more than Flynn's blondness. Flynn is just a little too pretty. The plot of "Scaramouche" is better and the subject is more noble. Despite my liking "Scarmouche" better than "Don Juan", I would recommend both movies for a lazy days' entertainment.

TILL NEXT TIME, TAKE CARE AND HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
