NOTES FROM ANNIE'S ATTIC______ Here's a little test for you. What is different about the text of the newsletter masthead? Give up? Well, it's our zip cod. It is no longer 33569. The post office has changed it to 33568. So, please, if you are writing to SHLT or are one of the groups who trade newsletters with SHLT, please make a note of this change.
Every now and then you hear a word or phrase that is especially pleasing. One of my favorites is one I learned of in Marilyn Vos Savant's column in "Parade Magazine". I've told you about it before. It's "moonglade". It is the name for moonlight shining on water. It's not word I find many occasions to use, but I just love it. Whenever I think of it, I picture night time at Nakomis Beach. Silver moonlight on gray and black ripples in the Gulf. It's beautiful.
I have a new term that I want to use on you. This one come from my friend Gerry Duran. He said I should watch a fencing bout with "romantic eyes". I thing that's a delightful turn of phrase. He didn't realize he was talking to one of the world's hopeless romantics. Neither was he aware that I have been disposed to look at fencing with "romantic eyes" since childhood when I was devoted to Richard Greene's Robin Hood, and Guy Willaims' Zorro. (Ah, those where the days of good TV for kids but that's a subject for another time.)
We all know that "romance" means " a love affair". The American Heritage Dictionary in its first definition of the word, agrees with that. The second definition of "romance" is the one that applies here. It says "romance" is "A mysterious or facinating quality of appeal, as of something adventurous, heroic, or strangely beautiful". I've told you this before (SHLT February 1995) and you may hear it again from me. It's important to remember. I often forget it myself, but I am going to try to more often look through "romantic eyes". It does improve the quality of life.
Now, I feel challenged to find a way to get both "moonglade" and "romantic eyes" into a song or poem. When I do it, you'll know. Poor things!

MORRIS' MINI REVIEWS______ My husband Kendall, fellow Lovers Lane Gang member Richard Byers, and I finally got to go see THE PHANTOM. Practically all of your Stone Hill friends have seen it already. It's got a few flaws, but they aren't big enough to take the fun out of it. It's not as if you go to this kind of movie for realism anyway. Its got lots of action, a guy who looks good in tights, and female characters who are very pretty but are not bimbos. It has a special bonus for me in that Patrick McGoohan is in it as a good guy. Yep, Patrick McGoohan has been a fave since 1964 when I watched him in "The Scarecrow" on the Disney program while all my friends were watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's show. Lately, most of his roles have been bad guys and it was good to see him as a good guy again.
If you watch the "X-Files", you may feel THE ARRIVAL is a bit of a cheat. My buddy Jasson Collin--"X-Files" fan extraordinaire thought it was. However, I enjoyed it. It's not high art and it's not realistic but then this is, like THE PHANTOM, not a movie you go to fore realism. It kept me in my seat and I thought it was worth my money to see it. I did think the scene on the satellite dish was a little too much like the one in GOLDENEYE but that's a minor quibble. THE ARRIVAL was good matinee fare.

BIRTHDAY TIME______ This time out, congratulations on getting another year under their belts go to: Deidre Delay - July 2, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - July 4, Geoff Brophy - July 11, Kendall "Two Mules" Morris (my legal and very significant other) - July 29. Happy Birthday on your special day and Merry Unbirthdays for all other days to each of you!

COOKS CORNER______ Here is the cake recipe I use for Lovers Lane resident Terri Jones. This is really easy and it comes out tasting good every time.

TERRI'S BIRTHDAY PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE

1 package yellow cake mix 1 cup dark brown sugar
1 20 oz. can sliced pineapple 1/2 cup margarine

Heat margarine and sugar on microwave on hight for 1 minute. Stire until sugar
is disollved and mixed well with margarine. Line two 9" microwave safe cake
pans with waxed paper. Pour half of margarine and sugar into each pan. Place
pineapple slices in sugar mixture (you can also use maraschino cherries or nuts
along with pineapple slices) Prepare cake mix according to package directions,
and pour half of batter into each pan. Bake one at a time in the microwave on 70%
power for 12 minutes. Let cool in pans. Use a knife to loosen edges and turn cakes
out onto plates. Peel wax paper from top of cakes and dig in.
