NECRONOMICON NOTES
It looks as if we've made it safely through another year of NECRONOMICON. We had 985 paying members of the convention this year. With them and our staff, dealers (who pay but don't get counted as members since they don't get out of the dealers' room much), guests and guests' companions, there were about 1,125 people at the convention.
The charity auction raised about $1500 and the the Carnival of Souls took in about $60. I don't have figures for what the "yard sale" added to the coffers. However, I can tell you that with these funds and an addition from the NECRONOMICON treasury, we gave Wildlife Rescue, Inc. $5000.
Now, you have the numbers but the convention is not all about numbers. Its purpose is to give those who are present a good time for the weekend. I think that mission was accomplished. Most events were very well attended. We had standing room only in the fencing demonstration.
The masquerade audience was its usual large self. We had 30 entries in the masquerade this year, making it the biggest since 1987 and not only did we have more costumers for our audience to enjoy but there were some truly outstanding ones. Perennial winners Torrie Mathis and Steve Rapuzzi both took home first place medals this year. For those of you who were present, Torrie's was the Swan Angel and Steve was Asmodi. Many other entrants had great costumes but none have entered the masquerade as often and won prizes as often as Torrie and Steve. They truly deserve to be given the title of "Master Costumer."
Our science panels are typically the least attended part of our program but I heard that they were graced with higher attendance than is common. The Immortality panel was the one I heard the most about. Apparently, that subject was of great interest. I'd have gone myself but I was in the hall fencing at the time. I have pictures to prove it. (I found that a fencing mask made such a lovely fashion statement with my costume.)
The Ygor party, with its Roaring 20s theme was packed as it always is. I did manage to squeeze into the room but "SQUEEZE" is the key word there. I was going to say "Hi!" to my husband who was one of the hosts but there was no way I was going to be able to get close enough to the bar to get his attention. He was in the midst of officiating at the Ghourmet Bheer Tasting and well, you know, you can't come between a beermeister and the brew.
The Mighty Rassilon Art Players were popular but then, that's to be expected. I'd heard they were good but had never had a chance to see them myself until this year. They really are good! I'll be glad to visit Bumpers Crossroads anytime. We already know they'll be back with us next year and they've got a great new idea for some Friday night fun.
Although I am not a gamer, I can tell you that the gaming rooms were full and the halls were full of the Live Action Role Play folks. I also know the card gamers were in full force as I witnessed many a pair perusing a notebook full of card pocket pages and discussing the merits of the contents.
I could go on and on but if you were not there, it would just make you even sadder about that fact and if you were there, you know it all already and have the memories to see you through till next year.
By the way, how many of you went to the panels that were not there? It was all a part of the conspiracy, you know. Beware of those people with dark glasses...
One last thing: I want to thank everyone who was with us, as a guest, a dealer, staff, or a fan out for fun. It takes all of us to make it work and I think it worked very well indeed. THANK YOU!
