NOTES FROM ANNIE'S ATTIC
This month, I'd like to ask for some help with a
project. When I mentioned my complaints about the lack of science fiction and fantasy titles offered by the Large Print Book Club, I got lots of good suggestions for sources of SF and fantasy from SHLT readers. I'm hoping you will come through for me again.
As well as writing for Stone Hill, I have a web page devoted to topics of interest to fencers. For an upcoming issue of the fencing newsletter, I compiled a list of movies that have at least some scenes in which swords or sword fights are featured. This was fairly easy because there was a pretty good list in a fencing F.A.Q. on the net and I found many more in the Internet Movie Database (which is a great web site, by the way). Some, I just remembered all on my own. What I'd like to do now is compile a list of books that have scenes with fencing or sword fighting. This is where you come in. You read a lot, right? Well, I would love from you about books that would go well in my list. The information I need on the books is just the title and author. If you know the publication year and if the book is still in print, that would be helpful but is not absolutely necessary.
You ladies and gentlemen who read this and are authors yourselves should not feel shy about sending me your own book titles. I know that some of you have written books that should be on my list but I can't recall all of them, so I will appreciate it very much if you remind me of your own works. When the list is done, I will publish it in SHLT as well as on my fencing web page.
I am looking forward to hearing from many of you and I'll just go ahead and thank you in advance for your help. THANK YOU!!!
THE LIST
The list I made up for the fencing page might be interesting to you
because quite a few of the entries are fantasy and science fiction films. You could take this list with you to a video store to help you find some good old stuff in addition to the more recent movies.

MORRIS' MINI MOVIE REVIEWS
I recommend both HERCULES and MEN IN
BLACK. Both are light entertainment: just what you need on these hot summer days.
HERCULES plays fast and loose with Greek mythology but then, what movie that has used it as a source has not done so? It doesn't matter. The movie is a lot of fun. There are a lot of clever pop culture references thrown in to make it timely. I liked the gospel singer muses but I must admit that you probably won't go away humming any tunes from this movie. The music is not as outstanding as in some other of Disney's animated features. However, the solid plot and the way it causes you to get involved with the characters more than makes up for that lack. Get out of the dangerous afternoon sun and go see this at a matinee.
MEN IN BLACK is based on a comic, though I didn't know that till I saw the credits. I imagine that the comic is going to become quite a bit more popular than it has been before now because the movie is getting great reviews from real people as well as critics. (No offense to critics but I'm firmly convinced that many are not of this earth. They seem to see some of my favorite movies in an entirely different way than I have seen them.) MEN IN BLACK is good brain candy. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith make a great pair. Jones is your by the book guy who is paired up with the wisecracking, doesn't play by the rules guy Smith. It's a variation on the "buddy cop" theme. There are lots of cool aliens and nifty hardware. After seeing it, you just may want to enlist in MiB.
BIRTHDAY NOTES
Last month, a couple of Stone Hill friends had birthdays that
were not mentioned because they had not given those important dates to me. Now, I have them on my master list and we'll play "catch-up" this month. It must be mentioned that another Stone Hill couple has added to the Stone Hill ranks with a baby. Ian William Faber was born to Marna and Jack Faber on June 19. He weighed in at 5 pounds, 5 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. Congratulations to the Faber Family!
And now, the birthday list:
Edmund Rush-June 2
Ian William Faber -June 19
Rosemarie Auten-June 22
Deidre Delay-July 2
Geoff Brophy-July 11
Kendall F. Morris-July 29
AUGUST 10th STONE HILL MEETING
The place for the August 10 meeting is the
Bennett house at 12215 Spottswood Dr. Riverview, phone: 813/671-2859. Not only is this going to be a blood drive meeting (eat those dark green, leafy vegetables) but it is important for those who want to work on NECRONOMICON. We will be signing up to help in various departments and making some final decisions. If you have issues about the convention to bring up, the August meeting is a must to attend. We also will be voting on this year's T-shirt design.
That's all for this time, kids.
TILL NEXT TIME, TAKE CARE AND HAVE FUN!
