NOTES FROM ANNIE'S ATTIC
Thirty years ago today, June 5, 1967, I graduated
from high school. Since graduates had to be early to get ready for the ceremony, I went with a friend and my parents came later. This is significant because it gave my father a chance to hear the news between the time I saw him at home in the morning and when I got in his car to go home in the afternoon. I remember very well the first thing he said to me. He said, "Well, World War III started today." This was not a very cheery thing to hear on what was supposed to be a momentous occasion and the start of bigger and better things for me. However, my father was convinced that we truly were headed for World War III. Fortunately, what actually occurred was the Six Days War in the Middle East and though that was bad enough, it didn't set off war all over the world. The funny thing about that summer was that with such an unpleasant start, it ended up being known as "The Summer of Love." It was the time for flower children and songs about peace and love. Oh, plenty of the members of older generations were not keen on the musical choices of young people or the fashion statements they made and there was much talk about the evils of marijuana but that summer was still essentially a calm before the storm that was to arise in the next few years. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy were still alive and the trouble at Kent State was three years away. Many of us were opposed to the U.S. presence in Vietnam but the biggest protests were yet to come.
My friends and I spent a lazy summer listening to music, hanging out at our favorite places, and anticipating the fall when we'd be in college. We were a pretty naive bunch. We honestly thought that nobody we knew ever smoked dope or took LSD. Why only people in places like Haight-Ashbury and Greenwich Village did that! It was a fun, innocent time. I don't miss it though because I still have the most important part of it -- the ideals about living peacefully and loving others and caring for the planet.
Today, June 5, 1997, I find myself feeling most fortunate to have been young at an interesting time but also feel that I still live in an interesting time. I have a nice life and even though there are some nasty things in our world today, there are more beautiful things in it. Stay tuned and I'll let you know what I think about the world when I look at it in 2027.

MOVIES MOVIES AND MORE MOVIES
My house has been movie central lately.
Now that it's rerun city on TV, movies are the entertainment of choice much of the time. Some on TV I've missed the beginnings of but have seen before, so it was okay. Those were "Uncle Buck," "Clueless," and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."
A couple of fun made for TV movies that were on recently were a new "Columbo" movie and a new "Rockford Files" adventure. The tapes I've seen recently are: "Blood Song," (a very predictable but pleasantly gothic horror movie), "Undead Express" (a kind of a kid's horror movie), "Harriet the Spy" (a cute kid movie with Rosie O'Donnell), the new "Romeo and Juliet" (very cleverly done), "Henry V" (Kevin Branaugh), "Persuasion" (a Jane Austin story), "South Pacific" (I had never seen the play or movie), "Man of La Mancha" (the musical version with Peter O'Toole who doesn't really sing too well but he's PETER O'TOOLE, so who cares?), "Four Rooms" (an anthology thing), "Dragonheart" (predictable but a very good dragon), and what is the silliest of all, "Ring of the Musketeers." This last starred David Hasselhoff, so right there, you can't take it seriously. It's got Cheech Marin in it though and he's always fun.
I have seen a couple of movies at the theater too. "Austin Powers" and "The Fifth Element" were both quite entertaining.
TILL NEXT TIME, TAKE CARE AND HAVE FUN!
